THE MUGHALS

The Mughals were a dynasty that founded and ruled a powerful empire in the Indian subcontinent from 1526 to 1857, known as the Mughal Empire. Founded by Babur, a Muslim prince from Central Asia descended from Timur and Genghis Khan, the empire was characterized by its magnificent art, architecture, and culture, and it encompassed much of modern-day India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan at its peak. The empire ended when the British, who had been increasing their political influence, established direct colonial rule.
